Aims:
The Second Year Group Project provides students with an opportunity to explore subject areas beyond the lectures. Working in a group of between 6 and 8 members, students will carry out an extensive feasibility study with a view to answering key questions that arise from a self-defined proposal. The main focus must be on the use of technology to solve a global or local problem. However, projects are intended to be broad in nature and generally should involve consideration of social, economic and political aspects in addition to the purely technical. The project deliverables are a written report, a web-page and an oral presentation. The project will also be a vehicle to apply knowledge gathered in the Technical Communications program.

Learning Outcomes:
The project will help students learn how to:
(1) work effectively within a team;
(2) seek out information from a variety of sources such as books, journals and websites;
(3) understand complex documents and be able to interpret and extrapolate from the information in them;
(4) apply different types of knowledge in practical instances;
(5) analyse problems, breaking them down into their constituent parts, distinguishing fact from hypothesis, cause from effect;
(6) synthesise ideas and information gathered by different team members and from a variety of sources into a coherent and informative report;
(7) prepare an effective oral presentation.


Syllabus:
A call for outline proposals has been launched in June 2012 and a reminder has been e-mailed on 05/09/2012. All students are expected to submit an outline proposal with a strong technical aspect that tackles a global or local socio-economic problem. Multi-author proposals are acceptable with a maximum of 3 authors.
On-line student voting will select successful proposals to which other students can then subscribe.
Teams are encouraged, but not obliged, to work towards a demonstrator to show during their final presentation. Presentations are friendly competitions for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd plize that will be offered by Dialog Semiconductor. A representative from Dialog will be present during the presentations.
The winners will also have their work displayed on the EEE TV screen on level 2 for the whole academic year!
