Aims:
To present the fundamental principles and applications of Microwave Technology

Learning Outcomes:
1. Develop an appreciation of electromagnetic wave propagation in various media; how guided-wave structures can be used as practical components. The course spans a broad frequency range up to 300 GHz, with a view to bridge the gap between Radio and optical frequencies.

2. Acquaint the student with relevant mathematical tools; solving Maxwell’s equations with numerical techniques and simulating circuit behaviour of microwave components and circuits.

3. Study the fundamental physical limitations of both passive and active components. For example, why surface mounted devices are not used at upper microwave frequencies.

4. Present aspects of commercial technologies in the design and manufacture of components and circuits.

5. Evaluate the performance of microwave components and circuits using standard laboratory measurement techniques. A set of laboratory experiments have been allocated to this course so that some of the transmission line theory can be demonstrated in practice.

6. To describe the applications of commercial microwave technology: from mobile phones and microwave ovens radar and radiometric imaging. A practical demonstration of microwave oven experiments will be given at the end of the course to highlight a number of basic electromagnetic principle associated with cavity resonators.
