Ever wonder what could be done with the heat energy lost from your coffee mug? Charge your phone of course!
The average European drinks more than one cup of coffee per day, but most people wait to drink the boiled beverage until it has cooled down to about 50°C. This energy loss is relatively small in each discrete case, but occurs frequently and consistently. So instead of just letting it go to waste, you can use our concept device, the EEMug to recycle and reuse this energy.
Our concept uses a electronic device called a thermoelectric module to harvest the heat energy dissipated from a cooling hot drink, and convert it into electrical current, which we will use to charge the battery of a mobile device.
For a more in depth understanding of the EEMug, have a look at this report: HERE
The operation fo the EEMug is simplified to the three following stages:
Thermoelectric modules (or peltier cells) in the cup will have a temperature gradient once hot liquid is poured into the cup, and will start providing a voltage and current.
The voltage and current inputs from the thermoelectric module is fed into a circuit and regulated to optimum values.
The power output from the regulating circuit is finally fed into a USB socket, from which you can charge your mobile device.
A simplified process of how we developed this EEMug
Pretty much anyone who loves coffee and doesn't have enough time on their hand to charge their phones. If you fit this criteria, then the EEMug is right for you.
Have a look at the following responses we've got from around the campus.
'EEMug certainly sounds like something I'd buy. I always find my phone out of juice in the middle of the day, and being in aeronautical engineering, I have to travel between buildings all the time so I don't have much time to charge my phone. With EEMug I could have my phone charged on the go while enjoying my coffee.'
'You certainly found the right person to ask, I an avid coffee lover. Guess with all the coffee I drink I could save quite a fortune with this EEMug, haha'
'I always get so carried away when doing research at night that I forget to charge my phone. Since I need coffee to stay awake anyway, this device of yours would be perfect for me. Never shall I miss a phone call because my phone died again!'
