What is Sēbu?

セーブ (Sēbu) is Japanese for 'save'.
Sēbu is a personal and friendly food management system. It is an innovative solution to make your refrigerator smarter.
Stop wasting food

A third of all produced food goes to waste every year1. Households are responsible for almost half of this wastage2. Using Sebu will allow you to reduce your food waste by monitoring your food’s expiry dates.

Eat healthier

Oversized food portions causes the wastage of 32% of a household's food3. Sebu will help tackle that problem by suggesting healthy recipes with the appropriate quantities, as well as calculate your daily food intake for a healthier lifestyle.

Help those in need

13 million people live under the official poverty line in the UK4. Sēbu will help you give back to the community by contacting your local charities and arranging food pickups

Save money

The average UK household throws away £60 worth of food a month5. Sēbu aims to significantly reduce food waste through smart notifications of unused or closely expiring foodstuffs, helping you save money in the process.

How it works

Stop wasting food

Sēbu is the easiest way to inventory your food and monitor its expiry dates. All your groceries are added to a secure database as soon as you buy them. Each Sēbu device has a unique identifier that allows supermarkets to directly send to it all the information we need to create a full inventory separating perishable products from others. By the time you get home, Sēbu will be waiting for you with an updated list.

Your local supermarket does not support Sēbu? Keeping track of your food is still hassle free: you can use the Sēbu smartphone application to take a picture of your shopping receipt. An optical character recognition algorithm will read its content and add it to your inventory.

Eat healthier

One main reason for food waste is the easily accessible nature of junk food. Sēbu will tackle this problem by offering the user easy and healthy recipes, based on the food available in the fridge. The system will access our database and use this information to look online for suitable recipes. Instead of wasting products about to expire, Sēbu users will be able to eat them as part of a healthy meal.

The recipes will provide accurate portions of the ingredients so that extra quantities aren’t cooked and then thrown away. Sēbu will also be able to calculate your daily food intake and provide you with helpful eating tips, to encourage each user to have a fully-balanced and healthy diet.

Help those in need

Sēbu is not just about reducing food waste, it is also about enabling its users to give back to the community in very meaningful, yet simple ways. If a user has some food in his/her fridge that he/she will not use, instead of letting it go to waste, Sēbu will be able to provide a list of food banks and charities that can accept the product(s). Sēbu can also give criteria to allow its users to easily and effectively evaluate the food’s condition: this will ensure that the donated food is of prime quality.

Save money

Through smart notifications, Sēbu will be able to warn the user when items are close to their expiry/best before dates. We have been able to do this by implementing complex databases that securely store and manage this information. Sēbu can also detect and notify the user if they have bought an item and let it run past the expiry date several times. This valuable information can indicate to the user that they may not need to purchase the item in the future, saving money in the process!
