Research & Teaching interests

Synthesis of digital protocol interface converters using finite state machine specifications. Foundations of analog analysis & synthesis using infinity variables. Real time systems - semantics & implementation. Zigbee radio network implementation & applications. Neural network implementation & artificial consciousness research.

I am writing a book on history & philosophy of science, based on my very broad background in areas of mathematics, engineering and science, and contacts with scientists from 12 years at Cambridge  - this activity influences some of the second year group project topics which I offer.

I am Honorary Professor of Science, Technology & Society at Northeastern University, PRC, one of the leading STS research groups in China.

My career has given me an unusually broad perspective both academic and industrial. I have worked on a very wide range of projects, analog and digital, all frequencies and powers. I enjoy ferretting out and making sense of diverse technical material sometimes out of my direct technical area.

I enjoy many EEE subjects: Analyis of Circuits, Analog, Digital Electronics, Fields, Seiconductor Devices, where I find that being a teacher, even with very simple material, will deepen understanding and provoke reflection.

Practically I have supervised a wide range of full year Individual Projects at Undergraduate and Masters level. The competence and creativity of our students, at its best, is a particular joy. I also design and implement experiments for the Electrical Laboratory.

My taught courses are VHDL & Logic Synthesis (3rd Year EEE, EIE & MSc),  Embedded Systems (4th year EEE/EIE), and Computer Architecture (2nd year EEE & 1st year EIE).

I have a wide range of other interests, which I explore in the 2nd year group, 3EM group & 4th & 3rd year individual projects at undergraduate and MSc level which I set.

Industrial involvements

Industrial projects (work prior to my academic career)

Chase Systems.

In the design of the UHR4000 an IEEE inistrumentation bus controlled RFI measuring radio receiver, I worked closely with a small design team. My contribution was the system analysis, hardware design and programming of the microprocessor control circuitry for the receiver.

 The DIA1512 is a modular stand-alone multi-channel radio receiver and signal analyser. This project was under my overall direction,  it used a dedicated microprocessor with specialised timing support for concurrent analysis of the outputs from multiple receiver channels. The DIA1512 makes use of critical real-time signal processing. My involvement with all aspects of the design (including mechanics), from inception through to production gave me expertise in organising a complex engineering project.

Industrial Consultancy/Development projects at Imperial College London

British Gas. Study to explore potential applications of fuzzy logic in gas consumer appliances.

LSI Logic. MPEG-2 encoder ASIC design. This was a very large group project to complete & test a VHDL design to industrial standards which with two other academics I lead - I learned a lot about real VHDL implementation and group colla from this work!

HTT Limited. Design & manufacture of a radio-linked group response unit. This included analog & microprocessor system design, and had some interesting real-time programming and radio protocol issues. I also enjoyed updating my knowledge of state of the art electronic manufacturing techniques.

Programming & PC resources

Almost every Windows utility you need is available free and at high quality somewhere on the web. I used to keep my own list of favourites but here is someone who does this full time - I would strongly recommend this list to anyone who plays with Windows. You can sign up for a free e-mail Newsletter with this stuff & more.

Thunderbird is in my opinion a much better e-mail client than Outlook when using IMAP protocol, and also runs on both linux & windows. I need interoperability across three or more computers at work & home, and use IMAP folders to synchronise & archive current work.

Ubuntu is the worlds best sorted & supported Linux distribution, and a viable alternative/addition to Windows. It is now usually much easier to install than Windows XP - and all the software you will ever need can be added automatically with a single click. If you have never tried Linux before, or tried it & abandoned it due to difficulty, try again! Installation & integration with existing Windows systems is now very good so all you need is spare disk space.

Why do I not use Linux? Inertia, and the fact that office applications are not 100% compatible with Microsoft Office, which everyone else uses. Still, compatibility is getting better all the time!

Texworks for PC brings Latex into the modern age. No-one writing papers or books should be preferring word to the structured and more productive Latex.

SML is a well-engineered, easy to learn, strict functional programming language with high order functions, polymorphism, and a good range of imperative add-ons like efficient vectors. It is used widely to design theorem provers. It is also good for general programming: here are some useful links.

Post-Java programming languages are fun and very productive. Try Fantom for some excellent pragmatic design compromises.

Personal Interests

I like sailing small one and two man racing dinghys. I enjoy hill walking & long-distance footpath walking, camping rough. I love classical music from all periods 1500-2000 with the exception of a few late romantic French & Russian composers. I read avidly a wide range of English literature & some poetry, and also hard science fiction from 1960s, 1970s, and more recently the 1990s and 2000s. I read some poetry - and as a sign of my increasing maturity have been known recently to write poetry. My interest in anthropology, the most respectable of all the soft sciences,  started when as a student at Cambridge I read the notes to T.S. Eliot "The Wasteland" & therefore Weston "From Ritual to Romance" & Fraser "The Golden Bough". I am a keen amateur photographer - Nikon D80 - mainly landscapes.

I enjoy cooking and my palate is based on French provincial cooking but includes much else. My favourite source of recipes by far is the now unfashionable Robert Carrier.

I view global warming as the greatest threat to current society, and will vote whichever way is likely to promote action to reduce CO2 emissions.

I have since my time doing Maths III at Cambridge had a semi-professional interest in the interpretation of Quantum Mechanics. This is one of the philosophical problems which will I am sure be resolved and become science when we have a secure grand unified theory for gravity and electro/strong/weak interactions. My opinions are broadly many-world related, but I find John G. Cramer's transactional interpretation very neat.

I owe to my longtime friend Dr. Anton Garrett an interest in the renascent study of Bayesian probability, and understanding of the importance of Bayesian probability theory in science (see Four Modern Irrationalists - D.C. Stove).

I am a Trustee of the CCPN Global, a global academic society for advancing the study of China and the Chinese from a Comparative Perspective, that my wife Xiangqun directs. I have been serving Governor at my son's Primary School for 10 years.

My wife, Xiangqun, and son Neil, have helped me expand my otherwise limited range of interests. To Xiangqun I owe an interest in recent Anthropology of China & Chinese art, to Neil I owe Anthony Horowitz novels, and some familiarity with modern film, rock music, film editing techniques.

To my mother, Shirley, I am indebted for my interest in clear writing - it is due to her that I able to combat the worst excesses of an academic style when necessary!
