Looking into methods of providing clean energy, it was found that most renewable energy sources involve the harvest of nature’s most destructive forces; wind, tides, rivers and the Earth’s own internal heat all have the capability to cause much damage, but also much good. When first embarking on writing a proposal for this project, the idea of lightning harvest was inspired by this observed truth. High energy strikes the ground with the potential to cause irreparable damage, but, as yet, little effort has been made to capture the power dissipated.

It was then found that there is an important socio-economic problem for which lightning harvest could be a viable solution, and so the project began; there are areas with high lightning strike densities near poverty stricken, grid unconnected, communities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. By collecting the lightning and converting its energy to a low power medium, electricity may be supplied to communities that need it.
